Meet the Team

Head coach Jimmy Duffer will start his 1st year as head coach this season. All the players did a great job and the most amazing part was watching the players develop into a true team. That is why they won the State Championship:

Title caps Buffs' unbeaten year

AUSTIN -- The Class 5A state final was hyped as a showdown between Cedar Hill guard Jason Horton and Milby forward Jawann McClellan.

When it came right down to it, it was a battle of supporting casts and undefeated Milby showed it has the best squad in state.

Milby (39-0), ranked No. 4 by USA Today, became the first unbeaten Class 5A boys state champion since Willowridge in 2001 with a 72-67 win over Cedar Hill on Saturday night at the Erwin Center.

"My teammates stepped up," McClellan said. "They really helped whether it was with a steal or a big shot."

Just when you think you've got McClellan, a McDonald's All-American, under control, you realize MIlby is more than McClellan. The Buffs bench, led by senior guard Chris Jordan's 12 points, outscored Cedar Hill's bench 16-11.

Milby senior guards Kevin Quinney and Tramaine Webster were the scoring forces in the Buffs' scoring run that handed them their final lead.

Quinney made a 3-pointer with 4:47 left in the game to give Milby a 59-56 lead. Webster, the 5-5 point guard, gave the Buffs some cushion with back-to-back lay ups handing Milby a 63-56 lead.

Milby got the rebound on Cedar Hill misses to set up both of Webster's layups. You could see Webster wanted to dish it off, but with everyone covered, he gladly scored himself.

Horton, a Missouri signee, cut Milby's lead to 63-58 with free throws before Milby got the ball back and spread the floor. Cedar Hill, ranked No. 8 by USA Today, never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

"Once we got the lead we knew we were going to keep it," Webster said.

McClellan, the 5A finals MVP, and Horton each scored 31 points.

With Cedar Hill holding a 38-31 lead, Milby trailed at the half for the first time all season. The Buffs didn't like it. They were being beaten on the boards and not aggressively holding their picks.

That all changed in the second half. Milby finished by outrebounding Cedar Hill 28-27.

"(Coach Jim Duffer) challenged me at halftime," McClellan said. "I didn't step up like I should (in the first half). We came out with a lot of intensity (in the second half)."

McClellan, who scored 21 points in the first half of Friday's state semifinal, had only nine points in the state final's first half. Cedar Hill wasn't giving him an open lane to the basket that McClellan exploited against Klein Collins.

McClellan showed there was more to his game than layups and slam dunks as he finished with 31 points including going 4-for-6 from 3-point range.

It was McClellan that brought the Buffs within range in the third quarter as he scored 14 points in the quarter. It was his teammates that delivered the knock-out punch.

Milby used a 12-3 run to tie the game 45-45 with 1:44 left in the third quarter. Milby tied it with a John Williams second-chance field goal. The Buffs entered the fourth quarter tied 50-50.

Cedar Hill jumped back to a 54-50 lead before McClellan knocked down a 3-pointer to start a 13-2 run that included 3-pointers from Leion St. Rose and Quinney.
